Assessing the histopathogical and biochemical alterations in trichinella spiralis infection treated with methanolic extract of Alhagi maurorum

Abstract

A parasite called Trichinella spiralis frequently infects people worldwide. This study compares the effectiveness of a methanolic extract of the Alhagi maurorum plant versus the drug albendazole in treating trichinosis in experimentally infected mice. A total of 72 mice were split up into six groups: 1) CN: Negative control, or untreated and non-infected), 2) C-Alb: Mice treated with albendazole but not infected, 3) C-Alhag: Mice treated with the methanolic extract of A. maurorum but not infected, 4) CI: Positive control (infected, untreated), 5) T-Alb: Mice albendazole treatment after infection, 6) T-Alhag: Mice treated after infection with the methanolic extract of A. maurorum. T. spiralis larvae were given orally to mice at a dosage of 300 larvae per mouse, except for those in the untreated control groups. On day seven following, half of the mice in each group were slaughtered. infection to assess the intestinal phase, while the remaining half were sacrificed on day 35 to examine the muscular phase. Treatment efficacy was evaluated through biochemical parameters and histopathological examination. All treated mice showed reductions in aspartate transaminase, alanine transaminase, urea, and creatinine levels, while total protein levels increased compared with the corresponding infected, untreated mice.
